About Homeopathy

The word homeopathy comes from the Greek “homoios” that means “similar” and “pathos” that means “illness” or “suffering”. Homeopathy is based on the principle that “likes cures like” which is the theory that a substance that can cause certain symptoms in a healthy person can cure the same symptoms in a person who is sick..

An important concept in homeopathy is that each person is unique. Therefore, the same homeopathic remedy will not necessarily help different people, even though they have the same disease. Homeopathy treats the individual and not the disease. By finding the unique remedy for an individual, the body is allowed to heal itself.

Homeopathy was discovered by a German physician, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, over 200 years ago. In Classical Homeopathy a single homeopathic remedy is chosen to cover all the symptoms of the patient rather then one remedy for each ailment. The remedy acts on all levels: physical, mental, and emotional; bringing the person more into natural balance. It brings them to a greater level of health overall, and makes them more resistant to disease in general.

Remedies are prepared from plants, animals, minerals, and other natural sources. There are over 3,000 different remedies, and more are being discovered, or “proven”. The substances are diluted in a process regulated by the FDA. The remedies themselves have little or none of the original substance in them, but rather the “essence” or “energy” of the original substance. For this reason, they are generally safer than conventional allopathic drugs, usually without side-effects and, less expensive.

Homeopathy is commonly used around the world and is the 3rd most common form of alternative medicine. In Germany, 77% of physicians use homeopathic medicines, it has been used by the British Royal Family since the 1830’s, and India alone has over 150,000 homeopathic practitioners. It’s popularity is also due to the relatively low cost compared to allopathic treatment, and the possibility of cure.
